The short answer

SweetDream AI ranks first for UK readers at 8.3/10. It is the only app here that combines live video calling with a UK-registered operator, which means UK GDPR applies and the ICO is your route if something goes wrong. Kindroid (8.2) is the better choice if you want to author a companion in detail rather than pick from presets. Nomi AI (8.1) has the best memory of any app reviewed and the lowest serious price, at about £7 a month on its annual plan. Character.AI is the only way to try the category properly for nothing.

The margin between the top three is 0.2 points. Treat them as three good answers to three different questions, not a podium.

Scores are weighted totals calculated from the published rubric. “Real cost” is what an active user should expect to pay once metered extras are counted, not the headline price. Checked 26 October 2026.

Some links here earn us a commission, and apps marked partner have a commercial arrangement with us. Scores are calculated from the published rubric, so commission cannot move one. Full disclosure.

How these scores are calculated

Full methodology

Weights

25%  Conversation & memory
20%  Privacy & UK jurisdiction
15%  Value & price clarity
15%  Customisation & depth
15%  Voice, image & video
10%  Safety & age assurance

Six criteria, fixed weights, applied identically to every app. The weighted total is computed at build time from the six sub-scores, which means a ranking on this site can never contradict its own numbers — a failure you will find on most competing comparison pages, where an app scored 4.9 sits above one scored 8.5.

The weights are chosen for a UK reader, and that choice is the most consequential editorial decision on this site. Privacy and jurisdiction carry 20% because the practical difference between complaining to the ICO about a London company and pursuing a US entity with no UK establishment is enormous, and almost no other comparison site accounts for it. Conversation and memory carry the most at 25% because it is the thing you will actually notice on day thirty.

  • Conversation & memory — 25%. Whether the model holds a coherent personality across a long conversation, and whether it remembers what you told it days earlier without being reminded.
  • Privacy & UK jurisdiction — 20%. Who legally operates the service, whether a UK user is covered by UK GDPR with a route to the ICO, what the policy says about training on your chats, and whether deletion actually works.
  • Value & price clarity — 15%. What a typical month actually costs a UK user once tokens, credits and add-ons are counted — not the headline price — and whether that total is knowable before you pay.
  • Customisation & depth — 15%. How much of the companion you actually control — personality, backstory, voice, appearance, boundaries — and whether those settings persist and genuinely change behaviour.
  • Voice, image & video — 15%. Whether voice, images, video and live calls exist, work reliably, and are consistent with the character you built, rather than being bolted-on generators.
  • Safety & age assurance — 10%. What stops a minor signing up, how the service handles users in crisis, and whether it has been the subject of regulatory action.

What this evaluation is. Desk evaluation against the published rubric, using each vendor’s live pricing and policy pages, Companies House and public registry records where an operator is named, Ofcom and ICO publications, and aggregated public user reporting. Figures carry the date they were last checked. We do not claim to have run a controlled trial, and we would not believe a site that told you it had.

UK-operated, and the only one here with working video calls

It takes the top position on a UK-weighted rubric for two concrete reasons: live video calling that nothing else here matches, and an operator a UK reader can actually complain about to the ICO. Neither is a small thing. But the margin over Nomi and Kindroid is narrow, the company is six months old, and the token meter is the thing most likely to surprise you on your statement. Start weekly, watch your token burn for a fortnight, and only then commit to a longer plan.

What works

  • The only platform in this review set with working live video calls
  • UK-registered operator, so UK GDPR and the ICO complaints route apply directly
  • Token costs are published per minute, so metered spend is at least knowable in advance
  • Stated refund window if you have barely used your allowance

What does not

  • Token metering means a heavy month costs far more than the headline weekly price
  • Reviewers disagree on memory quality — some rate long-term recall as thin
  • The operating company was incorporated in April 2026 and has no trading history to assess
  • Browser only; no native iOS or Android app

The deepest persona editor of any app reviewed

If what you want is authorship rather than a chat toy, this is the pick, and it finishes a hair behind the top spot only because it has no video calling and no UK establishment. Buy on the web, not through the App Store, and you save roughly £24 a year for an identical product.

What works

  • Persona editor is genuinely deep and the settings visibly change behaviour
  • Long-term memory is among the best in the category
  • Flat price with generation included — no token anxiety
  • Native apps on both iOS and Android

What does not

  • Buying through an app store costs about £2 a month more than the web price
  • No live video calling
  • Free tier is a trial, so you cannot evaluate it properly without paying
  • US operator, so enforcing UK data rights is more awkward than with a UK company

Best long-term memory in the category

The best-value serious option on this list, and the one to pick if you care about being remembered. At about £7 a month annually it undercuts everything else here while winning the heaviest-weighted criterion outright. It loses the top spot on multimodal features, not on substance.

What works

  • Memory is the best here — it brings things up unprompted weeks later
  • Annual plan is the cheapest serious option in this review at roughly £7 a month
  • Flat pricing with media included, so the bill is predictable
  • Group chats with several companions actually work

What does not

  • No video calling and no video generation
  • Image generation is weaker than Candy AI or FantasyGF
  • Free tier is too limited to judge the product properly
  • US operator, so UK data rights are harder to enforce

Strong image generation, unpredictable monthly bill

Buy this for the pictures, and go in with your eyes open about the meter. The advertised annual price is close to meaningless for anyone generating media daily. The bigger mark against it on a UK rubric is that you cannot tell from the site who holds your data, which costs it heavily on our second-heaviest criterion.

What works

  • Image quality and character consistency are genuinely among the best here
  • Headline annual price is the lowest on this list
  • Large library of pre-made characters if you do not want to build one

What does not

  • The £4-a-month annual price is not what an active user pays — expect £20 or more
  • No clearly identified operating company, which is a real problem for data rights
  • No native mobile apps
  • No published refund policy

The oldest name here, now firmly a wellbeing app

If you want a companion to talk to rather than date, Replika remains the safest and best-documented choice, and its free tier is the only one here you can properly evaluate for nothing. If you came looking for an AI girlfriend in the romantic or adult sense, it will disappoint you — that has not been what this app does since 2023.

What works

  • The most usable free tier here — you can genuinely evaluate it without paying
  • Clearest wellbeing framing and crisis signposting of any app reviewed
  • Longest track record and the most mature privacy documentation
  • Annual plan works out at about £5 a month

What does not

  • Removed adult roleplay in 2023 and has not restored it — this is not the app for that
  • Monthly price of $19.99 is the highest here
  • Conversation quality has been overtaken by newer models
  • Carries a significant regulatory fine in its history

The one that added real UK age checks after Ofcom came knocking

A mid-table product with the best safety story on the list, which is an unusual combination. The Ofcom investigation reads as a negative at first glance, but the outcome is that this is now one of the few services here that checks whether you are actually an adult. If that is your priority, it outranks apps that score higher overall.

What works

  • Genuinely the best age assurance here, which matters if you have teenagers in the house
  • UK-linked operator with an ICO route
  • Available as native apps as well as in the browser
  • Regulatory scrutiny has already forced changes a competitor has not had to make

What does not

  • Conversation quality is mid-table — it is not the most engaging model here
  • Has been the subject of an Ofcom investigation, which is a flag even though it was reportedly resolved
  • Heavy discount marketing makes the real price hard to pin down
  • Credit system is not clearly documented before purchase

Best free tier by a mile, and strictly no adult content

The right first stop if you have never used one of these and do not want to pay to find out whether you like it. It wins value outright. Understand the trade: the filter is strict, memory is poor, and if you want an AI girlfriend in the romantic sense you will hit a wall quickly.

What works

  • You can use it seriously for free, indefinitely — nothing else here offers that
  • Enormous library of community-made characters
  • Conversation quality is good for a free product
  • Has made real, substantive safety changes rather than cosmetic ones

What does not

  • Hard content filter — no adult content, and the filter trips on mild romance too
  • Memory is the weakest here; it forgets quickly
  • No image generation
  • Its safety record is a history of being forced to act, not of acting first

Strong chat, steeply escalating tiers

The entry tier is genuinely good value if conversation is all you want, and reviewers rate the model well. The problem is the ladder: everything interesting sits two tiers up, and by then you are paying more than Nomi AI charges for a better-documented product from a company you can name.

What works

  • Conversation quality is well regarded and the entry tier is cheap for chat alone
  • Four tiers mean you can start small rather than buying everything
  • Image, voice and video all available at the upper tiers

What does not

  • The tier ladder climbs steeply — the top tier is several times the entry price
  • No identifiable operating company
  • No live voice or video calling, only generation
  • Web only

Unlimited chat, metered everything else

The unlimited-chat subscription is a better structure than most metered rivals, because the thing you do most is not metered. Media still is, and DreamCoin pricing is where the budget goes. Worth a look if you talk more than you generate; avoid the annual plan until you know which you are.

What works

  • Text chat is genuinely unlimited on the subscription, which several rivals do not offer
  • Image and video generation are among the better ones at this price
  • Entry tier is cheap if you only want to talk

What does not

  • DreamCoins make the real monthly cost unpredictable
  • No identifiable operating company

The cheapest paid plan here, built for story-driven chat

The best cheap paid option here, and the free tier is usable enough to find out whether you like it before paying anything. You are trading media quality for price, which is the right trade if what you want is writing rather than pictures. The missing operator is the one real mark against it.

What works

  • Cheapest paid plan in this review at roughly £4 a month annually
  • A free tier you can actually use daily, unlike most rivals
  • Narrative and story-driven roleplay is its strength rather than an afterthought
  • Flat pricing with no token meter

What does not

  • Image generation is basic and there is no video
  • No identifiable operating company
  • No live calling

Roleplay-focused, formerly GirlfriendGPT

A decent writing-first companion let down by its pricing ladder. The $12 tier is fair; the $35 tier is not, given Nomi AI costs a fifth of that annually and remembers you better. The rebrand from GirlfriendGPT is worth knowing about if you are trying to work out whose reviews you are reading.

What works

  • Roleplay and conversation are the focus and it shows
  • Flat pricing with no token meter
  • Free tier lets you judge the writing before paying

What does not

  • Image quality lags the image-led platforms badly
  • Premium at $35 a month is among the most expensive here for what you get

Heavily promoted, hard to pin a price on

The thing we could not do with this app is tell you what it costs, and we tried. Published prices differ across every source, including the weekly-versus-monthly framing. That is not disqualifying on its own, but combined with weak memory and no named operator it is hard to see what Kupid offers that Nomi AI or Candy AI do not do better.

What works

  • Image generation and voice are competent for the price band
  • Large library of pre-made characters

What does not

  • We could not establish a single reliable price — published figures differ across every source we checked
  • Memory is weak
  • No identifiable operating company

Mobile-first and heavily upsold

Pleasant to start and frustrating to stay with. The onboarding is the best-designed part of the product and everything after it is weaker than the leaders. There is no reason to pay for this when Nomi's annual plan costs less and does more.

What works

  • Onboarding is the friendliest here if you have never used a companion app
  • Native apps on both mobile platforms

What does not

Image-first, thin on everything else

A generator with a chat window attached. If pictures are the entire point for you it does that job competently and cheaply. As a companion app it is outclassed, and the absence of any named operator is the kind of thing that matters a great deal on the day you want your data deleted.

What works

Widely listed, inconsistently priced

We score this low on value not because it is expensive but because we could not establish what it costs. Three sources, three different prices for what appears to be the same plan. Generation quality is fine. Until the pricing is knowable before you pay, there are better places to spend £12.

What works

  • Image and short-video generation are reasonable
  • Character creation is more detailed than the price band suggests

What does not

  • Advertised price varies by a factor of nearly three across sources — we could not establish it

Avoid — breached in 2024 and we do not link to it

Included so that this list is honest about what is out there, not as a recommendation. A breach that ties intimate chat logs to real email addresses is the worst thing that can happen to a user of one of these services, and it already happened here. We have not placed a link to it anywhere on this site. If you have an account, delete it and change any password you reused.

What works

  • Few filters, which is the only reason anyone recommends it

What does not

  • No identifiable operating company to hold responsible
  • No evidence of a meaningful security response

What UK readers need to know

law · money · data

Regulation, as it actually stands

  • Legal to useYes, for adults. There is no UK law against AI companionship.
  • Online Safety ActApplies to user-to-user services, search services and services publishing pornographic content. Ofcom indicated in early 2026 that a standalone one-to-one companion chatbot largely sits outside that scope.
  • Age checksMost apps here ask only that you tick 18+. Joi AI added real age assurance after Ofcom opened an investigation into its age-check compliance.
  • Your data rightsUK GDPR gives you access, deletion and portability. Enforcing them against a UK company via the ICO is far easier than against a US one.

The money, in pounds

  • Typical flat plan£7–£16 a month

Questions UK readers ask

10 questions

What is the best AI girlfriend app in the UK?

On our rubric, SweetDream AI scores highest for UK users at 8.3/10. It is the only app we reviewed that offers live video calls and is operated by a UK-registered company, which means UK GDPR applies and you can complain to the ICO. Kindroid (8.2/10) is better if you want to write a detailed persona, and Nomi AI (8.1/10) has the best memory at the lowest serious price — about £7 a month on its annual plan.

Are AI girlfriend apps legal in the UK?

Yes. Using an AI companion app is legal for adults in the UK, and so is operating one. What is regulated is the content and the duties that attach to certain kinds of service — pornographic material, user-to-user features and age assurance. There is no UK law against AI companionship itself. We cover the detail in our guide to UK law and AI companion apps.

Do AI girlfriend apps have to verify your age in the UK?

Most of them appear to be under a duty, and most are not meeting it. Ofcom has said a standalone chatbot sits outside the Online Safety Act only where it does not connect users, does not search multiple sites, and cannot generate pornography — and that chatbots able to generate pornography already fall under the Act's age-assurance rules. Fourteen of the sixteen apps here generate images with no content filter, so on that test they appear to be in scope; thirteen of the fourteen still only ask you to tick a box. Joi AI is the exception, having introduced age assurance after an Ofcom investigation. The Ada Lovelace Institute found the same pattern on a wider sample: 15 of 17 UK platforms had weak or non-existent age checks.

How much do AI girlfriend apps cost in pounds?

Expect roughly £7 to £20 a month for a flat subscription, and £20 to £45 for apps that meter images, voice and calls in tokens. Almost every app in this category bills in US dollars, so your card issuer adds a conversion and sometimes a non-sterling fee. The cheapest serious option here is Nomi AI at about £7 a month annually; the most expensive is Replika Pro at about £16 a month. See our full cost breakdown in GBP.

Is there a genuinely free AI girlfriend app?

Character.AI is the only one here with a free tier you can use seriously and indefinitely, and it scores 9.0 on value as a result. The trade-off is a strict content filter and weak memory. Replika also has a usable free tier for text chat. Everything else offers a trial rather than a free product — enough to see the interface, not enough to judge it.

Which AI girlfriend app has the best memory?

Nomi AI, clearly. It scores 9.2 on conversation and memory, the highest single criterion score on this site, and will raise details from conversations weeks earlier without being prompted. Kindroid is close behind at 8.8. Character.AI is the weakest on memory despite being the best free option.

Are AI girlfriend apps safe and private?

Treat everything you type as potentially readable by someone else. The clearest warning in this category is Muah AI, which was breached in 2024, exposing user email addresses alongside chat prompts — intimate data tied to identifiable people. We score it 2.5 on privacy and do not link to it. The practical safeguards are: use an email address you do not use elsewhere, never reuse a password, pay with a card you can easily replace, and prefer a service that names its operating company.

Can an AI girlfriend make video calls?

Only one app in this review set does live video calling: SweetDream AI. Several others — Kindroid, Nomi AI, Replika, Character.AI, Joi AI — support voice calls. A number of apps advertise "video" when they mean generated video clips rather than a live call, which is a different thing entirely.

Will my bank statement show what I subscribed to?

Usually it shows a neutral billing descriptor rather than the app name, but you should not rely on that — descriptors change, and some payment processors pass through a recognisable name. If discretion matters to you, check the vendor's own billing page before subscribing, and consider a virtual card from your bank or a service like Revolut or Monzo, which also makes cancellation easier if the app makes it difficult.

Which AI girlfriend apps are run by UK companies?

Two in this review set have a UK link. SweetDream AI is operated by Tetractys Development Ltd, registered in England (company number 17171203, incorporated 21 April 2026). Joi AI is provided by Novi Ltd, named by Ofcom as the provider in its age-check investigation. A UK operator matters because UK GDPR applies directly and the ICO is your supervisory authority — a materially easier route than pursuing a US company.
