The AI companion apps that take privacy seriously

Who legally operates the service, whether a UK user is covered by UK GDPR with a route to the ICO, what the policy says about training on your chats, and whether deletion actually works.

The short answer

SweetDream AI scores highest on privacy at 8.5 out of 10 because it is operated by a UK-registered company, which means UK GDPR applies directly and the ICO is your supervisory authority. Replika scores 8.0 on the strength of its mature documentation and deletion process. Muah AI scores lowest at 2.5 after a 2024 breach exposed user email addresses alongside chat prompts, and this site does not link to it.

What to actually look for

Privacy in this category is not an abstraction. You are typing things into these apps that you would not say out loud, and attaching them to an email address and a card number. The question that matters is not whether a privacy policy exists, but whether you could find a human being to hold responsible on the day something goes wrong.

That is why jurisdiction carries so much weight here. If a London company mishandles your data, you complain to the ICO and it has statutory powers over them. If a company you cannot identify, incorporated somewhere you cannot determine, mishandles your data, you have a strongly worded email and no recipient.

Four of the ten apps reviewed do not clearly identify an operating company anywhere on their site. That is not a technicality — it is the difference between having rights and having the appearance of rights.

The practical advice is the same regardless of which you choose: a dedicated email address, a password you have never used anywhere else, a virtual card if your bank offers one, and the assumption that anything you type could one day be read by a stranger.

How we score this

Privacy & UK jurisdiction carries 20% of the overall score. Who legally operates the service, whether a UK user is covered by UK GDPR with a route to the ICO, what the policy says about training on your chats, and whether deletion actually works.

  • A score above 9 means: named operator in a jurisdiction the reader can enforce against; plain-English policy; working export and delete.
  • A score below 5 means: anonymous operator, no identifiable company, or a documented breach of intimate user data.

The full weighting and what each number means is on the methodology page.
