The distinction worth understanding is between context and memory. Every app can hold a conversation within a single session. Far fewer can bring up, unprompted, something you mentioned a fortnight ago. That second thing is what people mean when they say a companion feels real, and it is the hardest thing to fake.
Be sceptical of marketing language here. Most apps advertise "memory" and mean a context window. The ones that genuinely persist detail across weeks are a short list, and you can usually tell within a fortnight which you are dealing with.
