What to actually look for
There is a meaningful difference between an app that is free and an app that lets you look around before it asks for money. Most of this category is the second thing, and the marketing rarely says so.
The honest test is whether you could use the product for a month without paying and still have a usable experience. Two apps here pass it. The rest give you somewhere between ten and fifty messages, which tells you what the interface looks like and nothing about whether the companion is any good at remembering your birthday.
If your budget is genuinely zero, start with Character.AI and accept the content filter. If you can spend something, Nomi AI at about £7 a month on its annual plan is better value than any free tier plus the frustration of hitting its limits.
