AI companions with the best image generation

Whether voice, images, video and live calls exist, work reliably, and are consistent with the character you built, rather than being bolted-on generators.

We earn a commission if you subscribe through some links on this page, including our commercial partner SweetDream AI. Partner listings are labelled. Commission never changes a score, because every score is calculated from the published rubric.

The short answer

SweetDream AI scores highest on voice, image and video at 9.5 out of 10, though its lead comes from live video calling rather than stills. For images specifically, Candy AI produces the most consistent character likeness. The cost trap is the same across all of them: image generation is almost always metered, so the advertised subscription price is not what a heavy generator pays.

What to actually look for

Image quality is the easiest thing to demonstrate and the hardest to price, which is why the marketing leads with it and the billing hides behind it.

The thing that separates good image generation from bad is not resolution. It is character consistency — whether the person in the picture is recognisably the companion you built, every time, or a different face with similar hair. Apps that get this right are using a persistent character reference rather than regenerating from a prompt each time.

Almost all image generation is metered. On a token-based app, each image draws on a balance you top up. An active generator routinely pays two to four times the headline subscription. Candy AI advertises roughly £4 a month on its annual plan and costs an active user £20 or more; that is not a trick unique to Candy AI, it is how the model works.

The flat-priced exceptions are worth knowing: Nomi AI and Kindroid include generation in the subscription. Their images are not the best here, but they are the only ones where the bill does not move.

Be careful with the word "video". Some apps mean short generated clips, which are closer to an image than a call. Only one app in this review does live video calling. Our voice and video page separates the three things being sold under that word.

How we score this

Voice, image & video carries 15% of the overall score. Whether voice, images, video and live calls exist, work reliably, and are consistent with the character you built, rather than being bolted-on generators.

  • A score above 9 means: natural live voice or video calls plus image generation that keeps the character recognisable.
  • A score below 5 means: text only, or generators that produce a different-looking person every time.
